Bed with a headboard

Positioning a bed relative to the bedroom entrance

Plan the bed position around access, door movement and the furniture you need to use every day.

Plan the layout and dimensions

Draw the full bed frame, including the headboard and footboard, and add the entrance door swing. Test at least two positions before deciding which view you prefer from the doorway. Include wardrobes, bedside tables, radiators and sockets. A layout that fits the mattress alone may leave too little room around the actual frame.

Check everyday use before ordering

Walk through the routine of entering the room, reaching either side of the bed and opening storage furniture. Check the route at night as well as in daylight. If the bed has an opening storage base, add the movement required by its instructions. Choose the arrangement that works for the room’s users rather than following a fixed rule that every bed must face or avoid the entrance.
