Using rugs to separate living and dining areas
Share
In an open-plan room, rugs can define activities while leaving the route between them clear.
Plan the layout and dimensions
Draw the living and dining furniture as two groups before choosing rug sizes. For the sofa area, decide which furniture legs will sit on the rug and keep that relationship consistent. For the dining area, test where chair legs land when chairs are pulled out. A rug that fits under the table alone may not work during a meal.
Check everyday use before ordering
Compare the two rugs from the main entrance so their colours and patterns relate without requiring an exact match. Include the gap between zones and keep rug edges out of awkward doorway positions. Check flooring compatibility, care requirements and any need for suitable underlay. If the room feels fragmented, simplify one pattern or use a more consistent colour connection before adding another decorative element.
