Matching mattress height to a fitted sheet

A fitted sheet needs to match mattress depth as well as length and width.

Plan the layout and dimensions

Measure the mattress you will actually use, including any topper that remains under the sheet. Compare the total depth with the sheet maker’s stated pocket depth. A mattress label describing width and length alone does not tell you whether the elasticated corners will reach securely. Check whether the sheet specification gives a maximum depth or another fitting guide.

Check everyday use before ordering

Try the sheet with all normal bedding layers in place and follow its washing instructions. Do not assume every fabric stretches in the same way or that washing will improve a poor fit. Keep the mattress and protector care guidance separate from sheet care. When replacing a mattress, add sheet compatibility to the checklist alongside base support and the assembled bed height.
