Floor lamp with a base and shade

Lighting a living room for several evening activities

Plan living room lighting around the activities that happen after dark, not around one central fitting alone.

Plan the layout and dimensions

List the places used for reading, conversation, television and moving through the room. Mark sockets and existing lights on the plan. Add a local light where a task needs it and check whether the switch can be reached conveniently. Compare fixture height and shade direction with the sofa and armchair positions.

Check everyday use before ordering

Test screen reflections from the actual seats and keep cables away from walking routes. Check bulb fitting, permitted wattage and whether the light or bulb supports dimming before planning a dimmer. Use the product specification to confirm compatibility rather than assuming every LED combination works together. Adjust one light position at a time so you can see which change improves the room.
