Arranging a bookcase without overcrowding it
Share
Begin with the books and objects you need to store, then use the remaining space to shape the composition.
Plan the layout and dimensions
Sort books by size and measure the tallest ones before choosing shelf positions. Check shelf depth and stated load limits. Distribute heavy objects according to the manufacturer’s guidance and follow any wall-anchoring instructions. Decorative balance should never depend on loading a shelf beyond its specification or leaving a tall unit unsecured when anchoring is required.
Check everyday use before ordering
Create a few clear groups and leave some unfilled space rather than putting a small object in every gap. Repeat a colour or material across separate shelves to connect the arrangement. View the bookcase from the room entrance and check whether regularly used books remain easy to remove. Reorganise for access first, then adjust the display until it feels calm and useful.
